un difficile arrivederci / a difficult Goodbye...

Carissimi Bambini,
chissa' se un giorno avrete la possibilita' di leggere questa lettera che vi scrivo indirizzandola a quelli che, da molto lontano, hanno seguito le vostre vite e pregato per voi.

Dearest Kids,
I wonder whether one day you’ll be able to read this letter I’m actually addressing to all those people who’s followed your stories and life and who’ve prayed for you all.

Ieri e' stato il mio ultimo giorno con voi nel villaggio dell'Arca e non e' stato facile. Per fare una sorpresa vi abbiamo portato tutti quanti ad un parco giochi in centro citta'... come vi siete divertiti vero?

It was my last day with you yesterday and it hadn't been easy at all. We had surprised you taking all of you to a Family park, and I know you've had a lot of fun.

Le giostre su cui salivate sembravano uscire da qualche film di fantascienza del secolo scorso... Sapete noi di altri paesi siamo abituati a giostre che vanno a velocita' pazzesche; per voi invece, quello che contava, sembrava essere la velocita' del cuore... cosi' contento di salire su quei seggiolini vecchi e arrugginiti che piano piano giravano.

The roller coasters looked to me like coming out from a science-fiction movie of the last century… You know in my country we are used to roller coasters that go really really fast; but yesterday I understood that the only thing that mattered was the speed of your heartbeat, so happy to go around on those old and slow and rusty roller coasters’ seats.

Qualcuno di voi, seppur quasi adulto, non sa ancora parlare... anzi questo non e' vero! Voi cosi' speciali avete imparato a parlare con gli occhi, capaci di penetrare chiunque li guardi. Voi che non sapete camminare da soli, avete imparato ad appoggiarvi agli altri senza sentirvi sminuiti, e voi che non conoscete l'affetto di una mamma o di un papa', avete non so come imparato ad amare come figli chiunque si avvicini a voi per darvi un po' d'affetto... e ieri eravamo tutti insieme a divertirci in quel piccolo parco.

Some of you, even if almost a grown-up, cannot talk… or actually, this is not true! You so special have learnt to speak with your eyes, able to penetrate anyone who’s looking at you. You who are not able to walk have learnt to lean on someone else, without feeling embarrassed; and you who have not known the love of a mother or a daddy, have learnt to love like sons and daughters of anyone who would come close and give you some warmth… we all did have fun together yesterday, all those differences made us so reach!

Purtroppo per me era l'ultimo giorno con voi, di nuovo la vita mi chiede di andare avanti e cosi' obbedisco, custodendo nel cuore tutto cio' che mi avete dato. Proprio ieri poi ho saputo che due di voi erano gia' stati portati in altri orfanotrofi e altri saranno trasferiti questo sabato... vi prego anche voi di custodire nel cuore l'affetto che avete imparato a dare e ricevere qui da noi. Ora entrerete in ambienti completamente diversi, prometto di starvi vicino con la preghiera, e' l'unica cosa che nessuno mi potra' mai togliere: e' l'apparente debolezza della croce.

Unfortunately it was my last day yesterday; life is asking me to go on and I obey, keeping in my heart everything you’ve given me, your smiles, your hugs, your sorrows… Even more, yesterday I’d been told that two of you had already been taken away by the government to a different place and some of you will be moved this coming Saturday, I do beg you that you too keep in your hearts the beautiful art of loving you’ve learnt with us. Now it’s time for you to get into totally different places… I promise you I’ll pray for you. Prayer will be the only thing that no one can take me away: it is the complicated weakness of the cross.

Dove andrete adesso il vostro cuore si vorra' irrigidire nuovamente, le mani degli adulti non saranno piu' per carezze, ma....
negli occhi degli adulti forse non vedrete quell'affetto che tutti noi abbiamo provato a darvi, ma...
per alcuni di voi anche il tempo che non scorrera' diventera' un vostro nemico perche' non ci sara' piu' nessuno a riempirlo con voi, per voi.

In the places where you are going now your heart will try to get hard again, the hands of the grown up won’t be for caddles, but…
in their eyes you won’t see the love and affections you’ve found in ours, but…
and for some of you the time itself will be the worst enemy, never passing, always there as you won’t be allowed to do anything at all and with no one to share it with.

Vorrei dirvi stringete i denti o i pugni, ma siete solo bambini... sarete bambini senza un punto d'affetto di riferimento... ma sappiate che nel mondo ci sono molto persone che vi sono vicine ed e' solo questa la consolazione che al momento sono in grado di darvi.

I’d like to tell you to keep looking forward and hope that one day all this will be just a bad dream… but you’re just kids. You have to know that all over the world there are people who are fighting to give you a better life and this is the only miserable consolation I can give you today.
